Electric Water Kettle

Bodum 5410 MINI IBIS Electric Water Kettle

Bodum 5410 MINI IBIS Electric Water Kettle

The miniature Ibis is sized to boil water for one. Its modern Scandinavian design makes it an attractive office companion for boiling water to make tea or coffee. And, with its reasonable price, this kettle travels well to college to make instant noodles in a dorm room. Made of heavyweight polypropelene plastic with a copper-sheathed, nickel-plated heating element, the Mini Ibis holds a maximum of 27 fluid ounces of water (about 3-1/2-cups). It must be filled to a minimum of 7 fluid ounces–just enough to cover the heating element–to operate. Plugging the unit in and flipping up the switch below the kettle’s handle turns on the power. The heating process is rapid and quiet: it takes only 4 minutes to boil 27 ounces of water and the sound is almost imperceptible. For safety purposes, the Ibis automatically shuts off after boiling and has a locking lid to prevent spilling and a frosted handle for a secure grip.

Espresso Granos

Bodum 3020-16US Espresso Granos

Bodum 3020-16US Espresso Granos

Just by looking, it’s not hard to believe this automatic espresso machine won The Chicago Athenaeum’s prestigious Good Design 2003 award. But, in addition to the sophisticated modern styling, the machine’s many innovative features make it easy to brew great-tasting espresso, cappuccino, and latte drinks. To take the guesswork out of making the perfect cup, the Granos offers a fully programmable control panel. Set it to accommodate individual preferences, or choose a single or double espresso by simply pushing a button. There’s also the option of using either regular ground coffee or the popular pre-packed espresso pods. The Bodum Granos’ ThermoBlock heating system ensures the correct water temperature for extracting the coffee’s full flavor, while its unique water system expels used water rather than letting it flow back into the fresh-water reservoir. A 19-bar pump, dual-wall filter, and a stabilizing baffle in combination ensure a consistent, correct release of pressure. Its filter holder and handle are made of chrome-plated brass, and all internal and external components are made from metal and high-quality electrical parts. Additional features include a cup warmer, a steam wand for making cappuccino and latte drinks, and an adapter for attaching bottled water directly to the machine. A tamper and single, double, and pod shot filters are included. This espresso machine carries a two-year limited warranty.

Electric Santos

Electric Santos

Many products are touted for their uniqueness, or how they’re revolutionizing this or that, but few live up the hype. Bodum’s Santos coffeemaker is different, as it really is unlike other coffeemakers on the market. First off, it uses an electric vacuum brewing process, and secondly it lets you watch the whole thing. Fill the jug with cold filtered water, and place it on the power base. Then twist the funnel onto the jug. Next, add fresh coffee (a handy scoop is included) to the funnel and press the start button. As the water heats up to boiling, the vacuum created between the two parts moves water up the funnel, where the hot water and coffee mix together. Once the correct brewing time has elapsed, the heat turns off and the coffee drains back into the carafe through a nylon filter (nylon doesn’t affect the taste of the coffee like paper filters).

In this system, coffee and hot water mingle for the optimum time, providing the best-tasting coffee possible. The process takes around 11 minutes for up to 12 cups of coffee (the minimum amount of coffee you can brew is four cups). The jug and the funnel are both made of sturdy polycarbonate, and the funnel is dishwasher-safe. (Clean the jug by hand, as it’s not submersible.) Other features include a 40-ounce capacity, a 24-hour timer, a slide-out funnel holder, a keep-warm feature, and an automatic shutoff feature. Neither the bottom of the jug nor the top of the power base gets hot during brewing, because the heating element is in the middle of the jug’s base.

There are a couple of things to remember when using the electric Santos. Always use fresh coffee, ground medium, for best results (stay away from using coffee from a can or powdered coffee), and use one level scoop of ground coffee per cup. So, for a full 12-cup pot, you’ll use 12 scoops. After testing, if the coffee is too strong, begin tapering off the number of scoops. Also, remember that there will always be a small amount of water left in the coffee pot during the brewing process. This is a normal safety feature.

When cleaning the Santos, don’t scrub the nylon filter clean–it should be rinsed under warm water. The coffee grounds from the upper section can be scooped out into the garbage can or compost using a common kitchen spatula. Then, simply wash the top section with dish soap and warm water. Also rinse the coffee pot with warm water as soon as you are finished drinking coffee. After rinsing, leave the lid open and let the coffee pot air dry. Every so often, clean the pot with a basic de-liming agent.

The Santos also recently won a prestigious gold Industrial Design Excellence Award (IDEA) in the consumer products division. Award-winners are selected by the Industrial Designers Society of America. There were 1,260 entries from around the world in the contest, and only 44 gold awards were given.

Bodum Chambord 27-Ounce Stainless-Steel Stovetop Espresso Maker

Espresso drinkers who don’t want to fuss with valves and knobs will appreciate the simplicity of this stovetop espresso maker. Constructed of durable stainless steel with a retro-look black Bakelite handle, the machine heats on any type of stovetop burner and doesn’t require paper filters. Bodum includes user-friendly directions for filling the bottom compartment with water, the cone-shaped filter with fine coffee grounds, and what sound to listen for when steam has forced its way through the grounds and deposited the aromatic brew in the upper chamber. A safety valve regulates the steam pressure. This is the larger of two sizes of stovetop espresso maker by Bodum, measuring 9 inches tall and 4-1/4 inches in diameter at the base. The 27-ounce capacity pours approximately three large mugs or six smaller cups of coffee. After use, the espresso maker can be unscrewed and every piece placed in the dishwasher or quickly washed by hand. Allow to dry completely before reassembling. Caution: Use a small burner whose diameter matches the bottom of the espresso maker as closely as possible, and make sure the handle is not directly over the heat from the burner.

Antigua Burr Grinder

Bodum 5671-57USA Antigua Burr Grinder, Matte Chrome Finish

Bodum 5671-57USA Antigua Burr Grinder, Matte Chrome Finish

Coffee connoisseurs know that even with excellent coffee beans, the perfect water, and a high-quality brewing machine, coffee still will not be good without the right grind. Bodum’s Antigua grinder produces a superior grind by using a sharp, hand-forged, conical stainless-steel blade so that the coffee is cut rather than crushed. An inlet cover over the blade makes it easy to grind oily beans. In addition, the two-step grinding gear has a powerful motor so that the rotation is quiet and occurs at low speeds. This keeps the beans from overheating, thereby retaining the coffee’s flavor and aroma.

Measuring 8 by 10-1/2 inches, the Antigua is designed to be a smaller version of professional burr grinders for in-home use, occupying only as much counter space as a traditional 10-cup coffeemaker. Although the unit is compact, the bean container can hold up to 1/2 pound of coffee beans at a time. An airtight lid fits on the bean container and keeps beans from losing their aroma. Three grinding settings let drinkers choose their grind: fine for espresso, medium for filter coffee machines, or coarse for French press coffeemakers (or anywhere in between settings if an intermediate-level grind is desired). The timer/quantity control sets the number of minutes the beans will be grind, based on how many cups of coffee are being brewed, what type of beans are being used, and what the level of grind is. Both the bean container and the ground coffee container are transparent to monitor the grinding process, and the ground coffee container easily pulls out of the grinder for use.

An automatic power cut-out feature prevents permanent damage to the grinder by turning off the grinding gear in the event that a stone finds its way into the Antigua. The grinding gear also can be disassembled for cleaning. The Antigua comes with adequate power cord storage beneath the unit for excess cord length and a .25-ounce coffee scoop.

Blade Grinder

Bodum 5679-01USA C-Mill Blade Grinder

Regular coffee drinkers who are impatient to get their fix will delight in leaving the sleek, Scandinavian-designed C-Mill coffee grinder out on their countertop. Not just for good looks, the slanted grinding bowl actually has a purpose: it rotates the coffee beans for a more even grind. The stainless-steel bowl and blade can grind a maximum of 45 grams of coffee beans at a time. To operate, simply snap on the lid and depress the red button on top to grind. And, in case the C-Mill does get stored in a cabinet, the cord can be neatly tucked away in its base. The bottom pulls out to wind the cord within the bottom of the coffee grinder and then pops back in for storage.

Having freshly ground coffee at hand makes all the difference when brewing the perfect cup of coffee! Bodum`s New & Improved ANTIGUA electric coffee grinder was updated in several aspects in 2007, including a wider range of grinding from coarse to fine and a convenient instant grind feature. The conical burr grinder with its vast advantages was kept the same. The burr grinder allows you to match the coarseness of the grind to your preferred brewing method. Simply twist the bean container on top to produce a fine ground for espresso and a coarse one suitable for French press coffee. There are eight preset grind settings marked on the Antigua, plus you can choose any intermediate position. The ANTIGUA can be used to grind all kinds of roasts, from the oily espressos to lighter and dryer roasts. Moreover, the ANTIGUA is unlikely to clog up with remains of ground coffee provided that you empty the ground coffee container after each 40-second grinding cycle. The timer quantity/control allows for an amount of up to 2.8oz/80gr of coarse ground coffee and up to 1.4oz/40gr of fine ground coffee. The effects of static electricity inherent in all home grinders and we have done our best to reduce the amount of coffee mess in the update. Our new instant-touch button allows you to preset the grinding time for your preferred amount of coffee. You will need to experiment a few times, but once you know how much time the machine needs to run for the amount of coffee you desire, just leave the time in place and each time you wan to grind all that you need to do is touch th red button and the coffee will grind the exact amount you desire. The Bodum design department has scaled this professional grinder down to the smallest possible size without sacrificing the strength of the motor and grinding mechanism. 1-year limited warranty.

Chef’s Choice 645 International Professional Electric Food Slicer VariTilt

Operating either upright for meats and cheeses or easily tilted 30 degrees to “gravity-feed” vegetables, fruits, and bread to the blade, this food slicer makes it easy to prepare sandwiches for the family and the soccer team or prepare food for preserving in large quantities. The 130-watt condenser motor operates quietly and the carriage travels smoothly. The slicer’s 7-inch surgical stainless-steel blade removes for cleaning and sharpening. A thickness adjustment knob calibrated in millimeters permits slicing from paper thin to about .6 inch. The slicer’s open design permits access for large trays and platters to be situated directly under the blade. (A plastic tray is included.) Safety features include a hidden, childproof switch that prevents the slicer from being turned on, and an automatic on/off switch plate on the food carriage so the slicer shuts off as soon as the hand releases pressure. The parts disassemble easily for cleaning. Made of cast aluminum and stainless steel, the slicer weighs 13 pounds and measures 14 inches wide, 10.4 inches high, and 11-1/4 inches deep. It carries a five-year warranty against defects, with a 10-year warranty on the motor.
